The Day Of The Dead

October 30th, a celebration honoring two great friends and their family. I went to high school and ran around with their two oldest children, forming a bond of an extended family for decades. Both were educators as I was also. I always had an open invite to join them for dinner with just a phone call. The celebration filled the local art  museum in Des Moines.

Simone was from Czech(as I am) and taught high school. Mario was from Bolivia and taught at a private college. Simone moved to Belgium before coming to the United States pursuing a career as a diamond cutter in a family business.
Two tribute tables celebrated their lives and devotion.

Craft areas were set up for five different projects, along with a food area with some wonderful foods.

A documentary film was made for this celebration with interviews of family and friends

Both being big with dancing, this was celebrated by a daughters salsa group.
A fun time seeing long time friends, I had shared houses with both of these ladies. Monique above went on as an administrator for a private  school. Mirelle below works as a producer for Spielberg.

  4. Dia de los Muertos celebrations are such fun. We lived near the section of the big city called Mexican Town so we had many Latino friends. We learned a great deal about their culture and enjoyed all that comes with it. Including the food of course.
